LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) -

Although it's spring, many people are still trying to catch up on their energy bills from this past winter.

The prolonged cold temperatures and higher gas prices are the two main reasons for the jump in energy bills this year.

By law, Xcel Energy can't turn off a person's utilities during the winter, no matter how far they are behind on their bills.

However, as of April 15th, the company can start turning off people's heat.

Xcel urges those behind in their heating bills to contact them as soon as possible. "There are agencies that are there to help and will help, and they're out there and like I said, you have to meet certain income guidelines. But we highly recommend you give us a call now so we don't have to shut customers down," said Mike Herro from Xcel.
