WIAA responds to viral video showing boy denied hug

GREEN BAY, Wis. - The Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association is responding to a social media post showing an official turning a boy away as he tried to hug his sister after her team won the state basketball tournament Saturday in Green Bay.

Appleton North won the Division 1 state title.

The WIAA said that it acknowledges that the clip could be seen as insensitive, but for everyone’s safety, they keep all spectators off the playing surface.

The boy's father, who posted the video, said that Jaylen gets excited to hug his sister Syd after every game and cried when he was denied.

“It is not possible for the WIAA to know the individual traditions and rituals of all schools, teams, families and players involved,” the WIAA statement said. “When the WIAA staff receives advanced requests regarding special family situations or needs, we do our best to accommodate if and when possible.”

The WIAA said it reached out to the family to express regrets.
