DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) -

West Des Moines Water Works has promoted its engineering project manager to general manager.

Diana Wilson is the first woman to lead the agency that delivers water to 60,000 water customers. She began work as general manager on Tuesday.

Wilson has been engineering project manager since 2010. Before that she was an environmental engineer with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources where she focused on drinking water projects and regulations.

The previous manager for eight years, Jerry Stevens, left in September and Assistant General Manager Bill Garrett was serving as interim until a permanent replacement could be found.

The water works is owned by taxpayers of West Des Moines and governed by a five-member board appointed by the mayor and confirmed by the City Council.
