Low numbers in the weather forecast likely mean high numbers at the La Crosse warming center.
Warming Center Director Mary Fitzpatrick says back in the beginning of December, they were full all but two nights. Numbers did drop during the holidays, but they're expecting that to change quickly due to the predicted cold weather.
On Friday, La Crosse Mayor Tim Kabat approved expanding services during the sub-freezing weather. Fitzpatrick says they will expand services with fifteen additional chairs from the Red Cross, bringing the total up to 30 adults.
On top of a warm place to stay, the center also provides refreshments and a hot meal. Officials rely on the public's help to make that happen. "We're always in need of cups, napkins, paper bowls that kind of thing, plastic utensils because we can't, we're not set up to wash utensils," said Fitzpatrick.
The Warming Center is located in the First Baptist Church at 1209 W. Main Street.
