LA CROSSE, Wis. -

Hundreds of men will "Walk a Mile in Her Shoes" Friday, July 5 at 6 p.m. in Riverside Park to raise awareness of domestic violence.

The money raised from the event benefits the YWCA of the Coulee Region and Gundersen Medical Foundation's Carilee Fund, which offers confidential asistance to victims of domestic violence.

"My father was very abusive, so I grew up in that environment," said Carilee Fund Spokesperson Kim Salwocke. "When I moved here to La Crosse and started working at Gundersen Lutheran, I wanted to start something with the foundation that would help poeople who were in the situation get out of their situation and a lot of times it's the money that holds them back."

During this year's "Walk a Mile in Her Shoes" event, which is during Riverfest, organizers added the "soul sisters" option, so women can walk with the men and show their support. They will walk two laps around Riverside Park.

You can still register for the event or make a pledge to support a walker. For more information on the event, visit: www.walkamilelacrosse.org.
