Volunteers are cataloging the conditions of grave sites and markers belonging to former Iowa governors, lieutenant governors and federal cabinet officials.
The volunteers are part of the State Association for the Preservation of Iowa Cemeteries. They're on assignment from Gov. Terry Branstad, who wants the group to document the sites and markers by photographing them and assessing their conditions.
State documents that locate some governor grave sites are helping volunteers, but more research will be needed to track all the graves belonging to lieutenant governors.
Group members hope their work may lead to some renovations for the aging symbols. Branstad indicated in a letter to the group that the project will indeed help determine if some work needs to be done on the sites.
