Today is Arbor Day .
and there were a number of celebrations across our
area to mark the event this morning.
In La Crosse .
the city Parks .
and Forestry department held its 27th annual Arbor
Day celebration at Myrick Park.
The festivities included a proclamation from Mayor
Tim Kabat .
and the ceremonial planting of a Bur Oak tree.
La Crosse is designated a 'Tree City' by the Arbor
Day Foundation .
but the city's recent battle with the Emerald Ash
Borer is presenting some challenges.
With the ash problem, we're going to take down roughly
five thousand trees just on the boulevards, then the
ones in the parks too.
To keep the tree city status, we kinda have to put
in more trees than we take out.
So it's going to take awhile to do that, but that's
what we're striving for.
Onalaska is also recognized as a 'Tree City.'
This morning .
students from Irving Pertzsch elementary helped plant
trees along city boulevards.
Nine trees were planted along 3rd avenue south .
replacing trees that were removed last year.
