FORT MCCOY, WI -

A veteran hasn't let the federal shutdown shut her down.

Staff Sergeant Catherine Threat returned from active duty in Afghanistan in July. Since then, she's been working as a civilian at Fort McCoy until last week when she was furloughed.

Rather than sitting around, Threat decided to volunteer for a veteran patrol with the Chicago Public Schools "Safe Passage" program, a program that keeps students safe while traveling to school.

"When I heard about the Safe Passage program and the fact that we're just a presence there for the kids, the idea of a little backup in case they needed some, and veterans know a lot about backup," said Threat.

Threat returned to work at Fort McCoy Tuesday, but she says she hopes that in some small way, her presence on the Chicago streets helped a few students, even for a short time.
