LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) -

Some UW-La Crosse employees double as wood-working elves this time of year.

Scott Cooper and Kurt Grunwald spent the past several weeks making 50 handmade tugboats and barges.

Most will head to families in a program with the Family and Children's Center in La Crosse.

They've been making toys for the past 15 years, originally helping the Salvation Army. "Kind of a fun tradition now at Christmastime, and we like being kids and playing with toys and making them," said Cooper.

"This is just really a keepsake, families, even when they outgrow these, they still have kept them," said Grunwald.

The boats will be delivered to families next week.

Five of the boats will go to the U-W-L Childcare Center.
