A total of $100,000 is heading to community-based organizations that are meeting a local need.

The Great Rivers United Way is putting $20,000 into all five area counties it serves through venture grants.

About 40 different organizations are getting help, including the American Red Cross, Riverfront, and Wafer. It's also helping fund substance free events put on by Crossfire, a religious based organization supporting area teens.

"We also give an educational message to the kids about some teenage issues, so we'll educate them on some struggles as teens they're going through, and let them know that we're here and available for them," said Joshua Walden, Executive Director of Crossfire.

The organizations receiving grants in La Crosse County are:

-American Red Cross
-Great Rivers 2-1-1
-Handishop Industries
-La Crosse Area Veterans Mentor Association
-Rich Coaty memorial Eye Clinic
-Scenic Bluffs Community Health Centers
-WAFER Food Pantry
-YWCA Child Center Expansion

The United Way has given out more than $1 million in venture grants.
