LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) -

The Ugly Sweater 5K raised about $12,600 that will go toward educational tutoring services in La Crosse and help further education in Tororo, Uganda.

About 550 runners wore their ugliest holiday attire for the December 15 event, which was organized by Rotary After Hours.

“This project could not have succeeded without your participation and willingness to brace the cold for a great cause!” organizers said in a Thank You email to participants.

In Uganda, the money will provide resources for students and teachers.

More than 80 nonperishable food items were collected at the 5K event for local food pantries.
