WEST SALEM, Wis. (WKBT) -

In West Salem on Sunday morning, people also gathered to remember the events of terror attacks on September 11, 2001 as well as the life of a firefighter.

The Tunnel to Towers 5K Run and Walk series honors the life of Stephen Siller, a New York City firefighter who died after strapping on his gear and running through the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel to the Twin Towers.

Besides the 5K, Sunday's event also featured a presentation by the West Salem American Legion and a 21 gun salute.

This year, the event is also honoring the life of a 32-year veteran of the West Salem Fire Department who recently passed away.

"We lost, this past year, one of our greatest community members feel-- David or 'gator' McClintock-- so we took this day to not only to honor the national emergency personal, firefighters and police officers but also our local emergency personal," Laura Deal, Tunnels to Towers Master of Ceremonies said.

This was the first year of event.

Organizers say about 400 people participated the event.
