Tapping of the Golden Keg kicks off 53rd annual Oktoberfest
Oktoberfest runs Sept. 27 - Oct. 5
Oktoberfest 2013 officially kicked off Friday morning.
The southside fest grounds were packed this morning for the annual Tapping of the Golden Keg to get things started.
The opening ceremonies also included polka music and a speech from La Crosse Mayor Tim Kabat.
They also said goodbye to last year's royal family and introduced this year’s with the exception of the festmaster who will be introduced Friday night at the Festmaster’s Ball.
Oktoberfest President Kam-Lin Roswall says the ceremony kicks off a week of family fun in La Crosse.
"It really is a celebration of generations and that's our theme this year and it just fits wonderfully with the fest, there's so many things for everybody to do so come down, you will find something that you will enjoy,” Roswall said.
The grounds were packed for most of the day. The 3rd annual Slicing of the Golden Brat was celebrated at the American Legion Post 52 in La Crosse earlier in the day.
Oktoberfest organizers are expecting about 150,000 people for the Oktoberfest Maple Leaf Parade Saturday. It starts at 10 a.m. WKBT will broadcast the parade live. You can watch the parade again on MyNetwork TV (WKBT-DT, 8.2) at 7 p.m. on September 28.
