A West Salem High School student is hoping to teach her classmates the dangers of drinking and driving as part of her Senior Exit Project.

Katie Krien says with Homecoming coming up, she wanted her classmates to think twice about drinking at a party and getting behind the wheel.

She created a "docu-drama" movie setting the scene of a drunk driving crash, which led to a live conclusion with first responders, firefighters and police responding to the crash outside the school.

Krien also acted in the mock crash and included other classmates in the production.

"The main impact of my project was I chose students from our school that people know so that it's not just an actor that the police found, it's not just someone they don't know, it's someone close to them so that they really feel that personal connection with the accident," said Krien.

After the mock crash, students also heard from the mother of another classmate who was nearly killed when she was hit by a drunk driver.

Students at West Salem High School have to complete a Senior Exit Project in order to graduate at the end of the year.
