Veterans in one Minnesota community will soon have a place honoring the sacrifices they've made.

The Spring Grove Area Veterans Memorial Group broke ground Monday on a new memorial to honor all of those from the community who served the country. It will include the names of 967 people from Spring Grove carved in granite who enlisted in the armed forces dating back to the Civil War .

A special Gold Star stone will contain the names of 60 people who made the ultimate sacrifice and lost their lives in battle.

"We hope that the community will learn of the sacrifices of our citizen soldiers, those who served in all lines of work in the armed forces, also the coast guard and merchant marine," said Spring Grove Area Veterans Memorial Group board chair Charlie Sylling. "We want kids to be curious about what Grandpa did and perhaps do the research."

The memorial is scheduled to be finished and formally dedicated next June.
