SPARTA, Wis. -

Sparta police are searching for a suspect after discovering hazardous materials used to make methamphetamine.

At 6:22 a.m. on Saturday morning police responded to a call of a strong chemical smell coming from 514 Hill Street.

The homeowner was at the residence when police responded but said his son, who also lives there was gone.

The Sparta Fire Department, La Crosse Regional Hazardous Materials Response Unit and the Department of Criminal Investigations Meth Lab team all responded to the call after officers evacuated the home because of the strong chemical smell.

Sparta police say hazardous materials used to make methamphetamine were removed from the house.

They say they are still looking for the suspect and the case remains under investigation.
