It's just five days into Dairy Month and residents in Sparta aren't wasting any time getting into the dairy spirit.
They're kicking off their annual Butterfest Thursday at Sparta's fest grounds. In its 30th year, organizers expect the four day festival to be better than ever. There's a carnival, a softball tournament and live entertainment running all weekend long ending with a parade on Sunday.
Organizers say the festival has come a long way from when it first started, mainly because of Sparta's rich butter making tradition.
"We've had champion butter-makers for years and years and years in Sparta and we just thought it would be something nice in the dairy land in western Wisconsin, the farmers and that, give them a little advertising. Obviously it's good for the city. So that's basically how we started, we had to borrow money the first time we did and we've been going ever since," Entertainment Director, Randy Paff
Organizers expect to the festival to bring in about 15-thousand people. For a full schedule of events go to www.spartabutterfest.com.
