The $4.5 million Sparta Aquatic Center renovation is now complete and the facility is open to the public.
Project directors wanted the ADA-compliant facility to be a main attraction in western Wisconsin and in the state.
“We’ve got one of the biggest slides in the area minus going to the Wisconsin Dells – a 290-foot tube slide, something many municipal pools don’t have,” City of Sparta Parks and Recreation Director Brad Gilbertson said. “And to top that off, we have a lazy river in Sparta now, so you can sit back on that tube and relax for a while.”
The facility was originally built in 1946 and there was a slight remodel in 1984. They built right around the renovated pool for the remodel, which was approved by a city referendum two years ago.
“We’ve done a lot of research on aquatic facilities and tried to incorporate green technology into this facility,” Gilbertson said. “We put variable frequency drives on all our main pump motors so we can reduce our energy expenses. We did everything that we could with lighting so we could reduce our energy expenses.”
The facility is under 24 hours surveillance.
