Some doctors are calling vitamin and mineral supplements a waste of money in the fight against chronic disease and death.
A panel of experts reviewing studies says taking multi-vitamins long term doesn't help with brain activity or prevent heart attacks.
Local health experts say there's no harm in taking a reasonable amount of supplements if you choose to, but it's better if you can get vitamins and minerals from food. "If we're supplementing a poor diet with vitamins and minerals we're not going to absorb those the same way we would if we had a balanced diet," said Gundersen Health System Registered Dietitian Marisa Pruitt.
It's estimated that half of all U.S. adults take a supplement.
