LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) -

People in the Tomah and Arcadia areas may soon be able to use public transit when traveling to La Crosse.

La Crosse County along with the MRRPC and the LAPC are using a grant from the Wisconsin Department of Transportation to decide the feasibility of expanding the S.M.R.T. Bus service to Arcadia and Tomah.

Currently, S.M.R.T. provides a successful commuter service from Viroqua and Praire du Chien.

Officials say the new routes would benefit the city of La Crosse as much as Tomah and Arcadia.

"We have a shortage of employees right now so giving them access to a different pool of employees is good. And also, reducing the amount of traffic, reducing the amount of single occupancy vehicles into La Crosse, that's really important also," Charlie Handy, La Crosse County Planner said.

La Crosse County will be hosting two open houses for the public to provide their input.

If you would like to go, the first open house will be this Tuesday at the Trempealeau Town Hall at 6:30 pm.

The next one will be Wednesday at the West Salem Public Library also at 6:30 pm.
