Wisconsin lawmakers are debating a bill that would ban employers from asking for personal social media passwords as part of a background check.
Cheryl Gill, an attorney for Johns, Flaherty & Collins in La Crosse spoke with us live on News 8 at Five about the legislation, the legality of employers and landlords asking for passwords, and ways workers can protect themselves when it comes to posting information online.
The law being debated is in a state Senate committee right now, but could be in front of the entire legislature by the Fall. So far eight other states have a similar law prohibiting employers from asking people for social media passwords. Thirty-six other states have pending legislation.
