As the year comes to an end, many people are giving a little extra to charity to get a tax break. However, some other money-savers might be going away.
Congress will decided if they want to extend any of the 55 expiring tax breaks this January. There are two major ones on the chopping block.
The first is the Mortgage- insurance premium deduction. That allows people who got mortgage insurance after 2006 to deduct the premiums along with their mortgage interest payments.
The other is the energy credit. "Most people have already utilized all of that credit, for a time it was up to $1500 and now it's down to $500 and that's a lifetime limit at $500," said Senior Accountant Jason Steinhoff with Franke & Turnbull CPA's.
Also up for renewal is $250 for teacher's out of pocket expenses.
