Wisconsin state ski and snowboard tournament kicks off at Mount La Crosse

LA CROSSE, Wis. -- - High school skiers and snowboarders from across the state are satisfying their need for speed this weekend.

Mount La Crosse is hosting the Wisconsin High School State Alpine Ski and Snowboard competition.

It kicked off on Saturday and runs through Monday.

It bring more than 400 competitors to the area and an estimated 1,000 spectators.

Mount La Crosse has been hosting the tournament for about 20 years.

The general manager, Darcie Breidel said it's an event that impacts the whole community.

"People are staying in hotel rooms and eating out at restaurants, but for our area we just look forward to this event every year. It's people that are really excited to be here and you know it definitely changes some things around here. We have to change the way we do things to accommodate some people, it's just a great weekend for us," said Breidel.

The race administrator, Cindy Patza said the tournament is held at Mount La Crosse year after year because of the challenging racing terrain.

She says Mount La Crosse has to bid every year to host the tournament, but it's an easy win.

"Everyone knows this is the venue in the state. We've had people from the U.S. ski team here and they would tell you quite honestly that the hills we have here are like what they ski on in the world cup, just maybe a little shorter," said Patza.
