Westby Man Opens Wisconsin's First Indoor Shrimp Farm

Forbes Adam is raising 14,000 shrimp in four indoor swimming pools

Westby Man Opens Wisconsin's First Indoor Shrimp Farm

WESTBY, Wis. (WKBT) - The seafood industry is making a splash in Wisconsin as one local farmer opens the state's first indoor shrimp farm.

Right now, about 90 percent of the shrimp consumed in the U.S. comes from overseas, but Forbes Adam of Westby said as long as you have the right equipment, supplies and knowledge, you can raise shrimp anywhere, including Wisconsin.

By trade, Adam is an excavating contractor but it seems tides have changed.

"Between the price of fuel and competition and the price of everything going up, insurance and labor and the cost to fix equipment, I decided I had enough of those headaches," said Adam.

Now he's swimming in another direction and it's all thanks to an article his mother sent him.

"As soon as I saw the article I knew. Wow, that's a great idea, I never heard of raising shrimp indoors," said Adam.

It's probably because America's Dairyland is known for cheese curds and milk, not shrimp, but that didn't stop Adam from diving in head first. He purchased four large swimming pools, filled them with about 3,200 gallons of water and just added shrimp.

"I have two pumps that blow air into the tanks to aerate it. I have seven stones in each tank, they are called air stones, just air coming out of it and it aerates the water," said Adam.

Every morning Adam tests the water for PH, ammonia and nitrates.

"It just gives you a reading and then for each tank I write it down and monitor it," said Adam.

Then he feeds the shrimp three times a day.

"They come up and grab a few and then they go away right away," said Adam.

Adam may only be getting his feet wet right now, but this is definitely a deep end he didn't expect to jump into.

"Whoever reads a crystal ball, if they would have told me that I was going to be raising shrimp in the next year or two, I would have thought they were crazy or way off," said Adam.

In the future, Adam hopes to add about 12 more pools of shrimp to his business so that he can sell shrimp every month to keep up with the high demand.

Dairyland Shrimp's first batch of shrimp will be ready in June.  Click here for more information about Dairyland Shrimp in Westby, Wis.
