VIDEO: Watch the News 8 anti-bullying special

'From Cruelty to Compassion: A Community Conversation'

LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) - 22621342

News 8 is working alongside local school districts and organizations to put an end to bullying behavior.

We believe it has to start with a conversation, which is why WKBT produced an hour-long special called, "From Cruelty to Compassion: A Community Conversation." It originally aired at 6 p.m. on WKBT - News 8 on Thursday, October 24, 2013.

Our special tells the stories of a student who was bullied and beaten, a prominent local business person who was bullied in school and befriended by an upstander, or someone who stood up for him, and a major effort underway in the La Crosse School District called, "The Compassion Project."

We'll hear from a nationally-known expert on cyberbullying and several local people who deal with bullying on a daily basis. You'll see many familiar faces from all over our community talk about what bullying is and what compassion means. We'll also take a look at what area schools and businesses are doing to try and help make this a community of upstanders.

News 8 This Morning Anchor Jennifer Livingston hosts the special. Her husband, News 8's 6 and 10 anchor Mike Thompson is the executive producer.

This special took a team effort to produce. We hope it inspires you to start your own compassion project at your school, business, organization, or within your family.

We've also created a brand new website: thecompassionproject.me.

We want this website to be a hub, a one-stop-shop if you will, where you can find information from all kinds of different resources in one place and where we can show off what the community is doing to tackle this problem.

A few highlights of the website:
-You'll find a growing list of area schools that have created bullying prevention pages of their own.
-Teachers, there are links to curriculum and other resources for you to use in the classroom.
-We also have information for parents on how to talk to your kids about bullying and what you can do if they're being bullied.
-There's information on ways to get involved and how to start your own compassion project.

We really hope you'll use thecompassionproject.me website as a reference in your school, work and community projects.
