Students Making a Difference: Domestic Violence Awareness

TOMAH, Wis. -- You've probably heard the phrase "wise beyond your years."  It's one that describes this month's 'student making a difference' pretty well.

Devyn Prielipp is going into her senior year at Tomah High School.  She was forced to grow up quicker than most kids her age after losing her mom, Teresa, two years ago to a domestic abuse incident.  Her step dad was convicted of killing her in their own home.

Devyn is using her life tragedy to make sure others don't have to go through the same pain.  Just months after her mom's death, Devyn helped start the "Remembering Teresa Run/Walk" to raise awareness about domestic violence.

"After mom passed away, we knew right away that we wanted to do something, we wanted to remember in a more happy way.  She was a very active runner and she loved to work out," says Devin.

Proceeds from the first two "Remembering Teresa Run/Walk's" have helped buy car seats for the domestic violence shelter in Sparta and also build them a playground.  They've also just awarded scholarships to Tomah students interested in pursuing a career in nursing.  Teresa was an OB nurse at Tomah Memorial Hospital before she was killed.

"Everybody is passionate in something different and if they're really passionate to make a difference to help someone else, I think, it's kind of something in your heart that you just, it's natural," says Devyn.

This year's Remembering Teresa Run/Walk is set for Saturday, October 8th. A Spaghetti dinner and self defense class are tentatively planned around the walk.  For more information, go to rememberingteresa.com.

If you know a student who is going above and beyond to make a difference by volunteering, we want to know.  You can nominate them for the students making a difference award here on our website.  Just scroll over the schools tab on the homepage and click on "Students Making a Difference."

Along with the recognition, the students get a certificate, a $100 donation to their group or charity, a sports bag and a DVD copy of their story.
