Residents discuss Powell-Hood-Hamilton revitalization

LA CROSSE, Wis. - Residents of one of La Crosse's most blighted neighborhoods gather to brainstorm ways to improve where they live.

Gundersen Lutheran partnered with the city to make a number of improvements to the Powell-Hood-Hamilton neighborhood.

The southside area is mostly residential, but also includes the medical center and Isle la Plume.

Thursday night they laid out a design framework. Part of that included improving the street networks and connectivity so the three areas feel more like one neighborhood.

"We've still got disconnections between waterways, these great amenities, and the places where people live, so what we're trying to do is get everyone to understand that there's some fundamental things that have to occur in this area to realize redevelopment," said David Green, consultant with Perkins & Will.

The planning committee will take the ideas from tonight's meeting and come back with a preliminary plan for another discussion on Saturday.
