Red Cross needs blood donations

LA CROSSE, Wis. -- The Red Cross is encouraging everyone to give the gift of life this Memorial Day weekend.

They're spreading the message to be an everyday hero by donating blood.

The Red Cross said they see a huge decline in people donating over the summer months, making now an even more important time to give blood.

It takes about an hour to go through the whole process but that hour can save up to three lives.

"Every two seconds in the U.S. someone receives a blood transfusion and so it can be used for a number of things trauma victims, cancer patients, people with transplant surgeries. The need is constant, but the donations tend to go down, so we're asking people again make one more stop take an hour out of your day," said communication manager for the Red Cross, Bobbi Snethen.

The La Crosse community blood drive kicks off this week at the American Legion on 6th Street in La Crosse at the following times:

  • Tuesday, May 29
    • 7:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.
