Powerball jackpot grows to $600M

LA CROSSE, Wis. - If you were one of the millions of people throwing away a losing Powerball ticket after Wednesday night's drawing, you're not alone.

Not a single ticket matched all of the numbers. That means if someone can match all six numbers on Saturday, they'll win a record jackpot.

It's now at 600-million dollars. The jackpot has grown by an estimated $236 million since the last drawing on Wednesday. That's creating even more of a frenzy to play the game.

A local gas station cashier tells us most people aren't playing alone this time. "They'll come in and buy like 50, 60, 70 dollars worth, everybody is pooling in and maybe hoping to move onto better things, you know," said Deb, a cashier at the Mileage Station on Cass Street.

Again, the next drawing is Saturday night. Officials say the lump sum cash option is worth about $350 million.

The largest jackpot ever was a $656 million Mega Millions prize won in March 2012. The prize was split three ways with winners in Illinois, Kansas and Maryland. Odds of winning the Powerball jackpot are about 1 in 175 million.
