November 2015 Top Notch Teacher: Andrea Kramer

Student: Kramer's class feels like home

November 2015 Top Notch Teacher: Andrea Kramer

LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) - In her nearly three decades in education, this month's Top Notch Teacher, Andrea Kramer, said her newest role is the most motivating and inspiring thing she has ever done. Her students say that passion makes her class the one they look forward to every day.

Kramer teaches English and AVID at Logan High School in La Crosse.

AVID, which stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination, is a college readiness course teaching students how to think at a higher level, how to be organized and study more efficiently.

Kramer played a big role in starting the program at Logan and said she is thankful she did.

"To know that these students are so motivated to want to change their lives and move in a good direction is something that just makes me a better person everyday because they are so determined to want to follow this path to be college ready," Kramer said.

Kramer said the AVID program offers more opportunity to really get to know one another and because of that her students don't always feel like they're at school in her classroom.

"Everyone says she's like a second mother to us because we feel at home in this class and we can talk about our problems," sophomore Kelli Jo Knobloch said.

"I'm more open with her than other teachers because she understands our situations and I believe she cares about us," sophomore Chol Tong said.

Kramer said the No. 1 reason she is a teacher is because she loves working with high school students, that's why she has taught for 26 years.

But she said watching her students continuing to progress on their path toward college is what makes her job so rewarding.

"To listen to them, to watch them, to hear them share their pains and sorrows and then their joys and celebrations, and to know that day by day they're building their confidence and knowing that they can actually make this happen is a really beautiful thing and I'm super, super excited to be a part of it," Kramer said.
