La Crosse mayor declares May 11 National Train Day

LA CROSSE, Wis. - The rumble of trains passing by is a familiar sound in La Crosse.

On Saturday, La Crosse Mayor Tim Kabat asked people to remember the role trains have played and are continuing to play in La Crosse.

Kabat declared Saturday National Train Day.

He said about 60 freight trains and two passenger trains pass through La Crosse every day.

It's a mode of transportation he hopes will continue to grow and that more and more people will take advantage of.

"Our focus is really to expand the passenger service because again, that has some benefits to the business community. It provides another option from driving a car or taking an airplane and again, I think the more options and the more competitive that you can be that's obviously going to benefit everybody," said Kabat.

Kabat said there is a group currently working with Amtrak and petitioning state and national legislators to expand the passenger rail service in La Crosse to surrounding cities.
