Cold, snow could mean delay to spring sports season

Weather Takes Toll on Spring Sports

LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) - With winter showing no signs of slowing down, area schools are hoping it won't delay the start of spring practices.

Despite many spring sports starting next Monday,  a lot of Central High School's practice fields are covered with snow or too frozen to be used.

Even though spring practices are usually held indoors in the first couple of weeks of training, coaches are anticipating their teams will be practicing inside for a while. "That might be an extra week or two this year with the conditions outside. Not so much the amount of snow, but how deep the frost is in the ground. Evidently for baseball and softball, to get the infields ready that needs to come out of the ground, so that will probably take longer than it has in the past," said Central's Activities Dir. Joe Beran.

Central is looking at modifying spring sport schedules if playing conditions are not up to standards.
