Area hospital offers garden plots to help those in need

St. Joseph's Hospital's plots ready for gardeners

CHIPPEWA FALLS, Wis. (WKBT) - St. Joseph's Hospital in Chippewa Falls is offering plots in its community garden to help people in need.

For a $20 plot fee per household, individuals and families whose budget does not allow for fresh produce, or who struggle to put food on the table, can grow their own produce, St. Joseph's Hospital said.

"Food insecurity is a problem for middle class families too," said Rhonda Brown, director of Chippewa Health Improvement Partnership at St. Joseph's Hospital. "It's the family of four who have high medical bills, the mechanic who recently lost his job, or the single mom whose car just died. Unfortunately fresh food gets cut from the already slim budget because of accessibility, cost and other factors."

Service organizations are also welcome to rent plots, which are also 12 feet by 24 feet. St. Joseph's Hospital asks that they donate their harvest to local food pantries through the Hospital.

St. Joseph's Hospital is also planning to give free growing education classes throughout the summer to encourage its gardeners.

For more information, or to pick up an application for a plot at the garden, call (715) 717-7331.
