Maquoketa officials consider buying historic hotel

MAQUOKETA, Iowa (AP) - The Maquoketa City Council will meet to discuss whether to buy a historic hotel from a credit union.

The Quad-City Times reports Mayor Don Schwenker scheduled the private meeting Wednesday night to talk about whether the city should by the Decker Hotel and Restaurant building in downtown Maquoketa.

The owner of the 137-year-old building is turning the property over to Dupaco Credit Union of Dubuque. The credit union contacted city officials to see if the city could help find a buyer.

Schwenker says the credit union knows of one person who is interested in buying the building and using it for low-income apartments.

The building is on the National Register of Historic Places.
