Iowa animal shelter hit by flooding starts rebuilding

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) - Construction is beginning on a new facility for a Cedar Rapids animal shelter destroyed by major flooding.

A groundbreaking ceremony is scheduled Wednesday afternoon for a new facility for the Cedar Rapids Animal Care & Control. The group's building was destroyed by historic flooding that hit the city in 2008.

The shelter has continued to help adopt animals despite not having a permanent facility. The shelter's new location will be on the campus of Kirkwood Community College.

The facility is expected to open in October.
