LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) -

An estimated 5000 pounds of would-be trash will find a new home in La Crosse, and even more was kept from lining our streets and boulevards.

That's due to the Dumpster Diversion program.

When college students are moving out of their apartments, stations are set up near the universities to collect food, furniture and electronics that would have otherwise been trashed.

About 40,000 pounds of items were dropped off. Five thousand was given to local charities and 10,000 was e-recycled. The rest of the items were in poor condition and sent to the landfill.
