Same sex couples in Winona County started filing for marriage on Thursday.
New marriage licenses were available for the first time.
They are similar to the old ones, except there is a new box asking the applicant to specify their gender. Also, when the county files the paperwork, it will be as "married to each other," instead of "husband and wife."
Other than those changes, Winona County Administrator Duane Habert says the process is still the exact same.
"In many respects this isn't any different from a normal everyday business, just, it's a different group but the same people that we serve on a regular basis," says Habert.
While filings began on Thursday, the same-sex marriage law doesn't take effect until August 1, 2013.
