Representative Ron Kind is continuing his call to extend federal unemployment benefits.
As of the new year, anyone who's been out of work for more than 26 weeks is also out of a weekly check while they job hunt. That works out to be about 1.5 million Americans, 24,000 of them in Wisconsin.
Congressional Democrats, like Kind, have been pushing for an extension to continue those benefits. Their efforts have stalled in the Senate.
Congressman Kind visited the La Crosse County Job Center Wednesday to talk about the issue. He says the economy and job market haven't recovered to a point where there are enough jobs available. "Hiring hasn't picked up to the extent. We're seeing some positive indications that later this year the economy could pick up steam and could lead to further job growth and that's why we're asking for another short term extension," said Kind.
Republicans aren't necessarily opposed to extending the benefits, but they want to see other cuts to balance the budget.
