LA CROSSE, Wis. -

Nizam Arain, the Director of Affirmative Action at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse joined News 8 at Five to talk about the impact of the Supreme Court's rulings on the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) and California's Proposition 8.

For couples, the DOMA ruling means "that the 1,000 plus federal benefits that accrue to married couples are also extended to same-sex couples who are married in whatever state they got married in," Arain said. "What that basically means is all kinds of rights, from inheritance tax, which was actually the key issue for the couple that filed the lawsuit, issues involving military families and veterans, social security benefits. Literally, over 1,000 benefits the federal government provides based on their marital status."
