DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) -

Lawmakers in the Republican-controlled Iowa House have given committee-level approval to a budget for the Health and Human Services agency that would bar the use of Medicaid funds for abortion.

In a 14-11 vote split along party lines, the House appropriations committee approved the roughly $1.7 billion spending plan Tuesday. The House budget for state departments of Health and Human Services and Public Health offers less money that the version approved by the Democratic-majority Senate.

Medicaid covers abortions in Iowa in rare cases of rape, incest, fetal deformity and to protect a mother's life. The Iowa Department of Human Resources reported 22 abortions funded by Medicaid dollars in the last fiscal year.

The bill will now move to the full House for consideration.
