MILWAUKEE (AP) -

An Army veteran who now trains accident investigators for the military has won the Republican nomination to run against Democratic U.S. Rep. Ron Kind.

Forty-seven-year-old Tony Kurtz defeated two Republican rivals in Tuesday's primary -- former Mauston City Council member Ken Van Doren and civil rights attorney Karen Mueller.

Kurtz was the only one of the three to raise and spend a significant amount of money on the race.

Federal campaign finance reports show he raised nearly $113,000 through July 23 and ended the period with about $36,000 on hand.

Kind has nearly $1.4 million on hand to fend off a challenge in western Wisconsin's 3rd District.
