President Barack Obama thanked his family, support staff and voters for electing him to a second presidential term at about 12: 45 a.m. Wednesday.

Obama said he congratulated Republican challenger Mitt Romney on a well-fought campaign. The president said he looks forward to talking with Romney in the near future on ways “we can work together to move America forward.”

“I want to thank every American who participated in this election whether you voted for the very first time or waited in line for a very long time…whether you pounded the pavement or picked up the phone, whether you held an Obama sign or Romney sign because you made a difference and got your voice heard,” President Obama said.

The president thanked Vice President Joe Biden, his wife Michelle and their two girls for their support. President Obama also thanked “the best campaign team and volunteers in the history of politics.”

“I’ve never been more hopeful about our future,” President Obama said. “I’ve never been more hopeful about America and I ask you to sustain that hope.”
