MADISON, Wis. (AP) -

Conservative Republican state Rep. Don Pridemore has registered to run for state superintendent of schools.

Pridemore says in a statement that the filing doesn't mean he will definitely enter the race, but he will make a decision soon.

Pridemore is required to submit the required signatures to get on the ballot by Jan. 2.

Incumbent Department of Public Instruction Secretary Tony Evers is the only other candidate in the race.

Pridemore says in his statement that the status quo is not working on "it's time for a fresh set of ideas."

Evers did not immediately return a message seeking comment.

Pridemore was first elected to the Assembly in 2004. He was unopposed when he was re-elected to a two-year term in November.
