DFL leaders eye gas tax hike, other transpo taxes
Democratic lawmakers who lead House transportation panels are seeking a menu of transportation tax and fee hikes including a five-cent increase in the state gas tax.
Representatives Frank Hornstein of Minneapolis and Ron Erhardt of Edina say Tuesday they want to raise $3.8 billion for road, bridge and transit projects around the state of Minnesota. Projects include extending Highway 14 to four lanes from Dodge Center to Owatonna and adding a third lane on Interstate 94 from Rogers to Monticello.
Besides the gas tax hike lawmakers are also proposing an increase in license tab fees of at least $10, a 4.5-cent increase in the fuel surcharge, and adding the sales tax to more auto parts.
Backers say the money will keep the state's transportation system modern. But Democratic Gov. Mark Dayton is still expressing doubts about a gas tax hike.
