The Campbell Police Department has released the names of the two people found dead in an apparent domestic-related murder-suicide on Tuesday in an apartment on Tellin Court on French Island.
Dana Shefelbine, 18, of Holmen, and Jesse Klukas, 22, of La Crosse, were found dead inside apartment no. 6 at 236 Tellin Court.
Campbell police said they received a call at 10:44 a.m. from neighbor Jack Smizek, who heard a possible gunshot about one hour before calling. He also reported locating a bullet hold in their adjacent apartment wall.
"The bullet exited their apartment, came right in through the wall, glanced off the ceiling, took a chip out of the window frame and then into the back kitchen wall," Smizek said as he re-tracted the bullet's path through his living room and kitchen.
Other neighbors reacted to the tragedy Wednesday as clean-up crews came and went from the apartment complex.
Jody Cano, a woman staying in the building, said she came back to Tollen Court after work and saw a changed landscape.
"There were police everywhere, and things were all taped off," Cano said of the scene she witnessed at the apartment complex Tuesday afternoon. "I was just in complete shock."
Cano said she wasn't familiar with Shefelbine, but she had talked with Klukas occasionally as they passed one another in the hallway.
"Just last week, he asked to borrow a cigarette, and I think more than anything he just wanted to talk," Cano recalled.
Smizek said he had had conversations with Shefelbine several times, but never suspected anything was out of the ordinary with the two.
"We had sat there and talked a bit. We're more familiar with the girl than we were with him. He was a little standoff-ish," Smizek said. "It's just a sad thing. She had just graduated from Holmen."
Autopsies are being conducted in Madison. The cause and manner of death will not be released until the autopsy is completed.
Jesse Klukas' Facebook page is also part of the investigation. The page contained a note and two pictures allegedly posted by Klukas right after the murder.
The note, again allegedly written by Klukas, details how he killed his ex-girlfriend, Dana Shefelbine. Campbell police says the page has been taken down and they are investigating.
Campbell police and the La Crosse County Sheriff’s Department are continuing to investigate the incident. The La Crosse County Sheriff’s Department, the La Crosse County Medical examiner’s Office, Onalaska Police Department, and the La Crosse Area Police Chaplaincy assisted Campbell police with this investigation.
