LA CROSSE, Wis. -

The Sparta Police Department is seeing success since opening its first permanent medication drop off site in the city.

Since August, more than 150 pounds of unwanted prescription drugs have been dropped off at the department.

They say they're seeing a consistent number of people using the site each week.

The purpose is not only to keep drugs of the street, but also keep these types of medications out of the city's water supply. "We don't want these types of medications finding their way into sewage treatment plants and then into the environment. So it's a safe way to dispose of it, it's a great way to keep this unwanted medication out of the hands of people who shouldn't be having it," said Sparta Police Chief Michael Kass.

It total, the county drop of sites have collected about 600 pounds since last April.
