LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) -

A three way partnership is hoping to increase firearm safety with in our community.

The La Crosse Police Department is working with the non-profit organization Project Childsafe to promote the safe handling of firearms.

Thanks to a grant from the National Shooting Sports Foundation the department is giving out free gun safety kits to the public. The kits include a cable-style gun lock and a safety brochure for anyone wondering how to store their guns safely in their homes.

“We have had a lot people calling, wanting information, wanting you know what kind of locks work, what don't work, and so we're lucky to get this grant that we can help people out and give them something free to help make their house, their community a little bit safer,” said La Crosse Police Department Officer Kurt Weaver.

If you would like a Project Child-Safe Safety Kit you can contact the La Crosse Police Department at (608) 789-7240 or stop in at Wiebke Fur and Trading Company on Rose Street in La Crosse.
