LA CROSSE, Wis. -

Volunteers will once again hope to keep Oktoberfest-goers safe this year.

Operation River Watch is gearing up for another year of turning people away from Riverside Park after hours. This is the 10th year of the coalition made up of volunteers from UW-La Crosse, Viterbo and Western Technical College.

The group operates year-round during the school year, but is especially important during Oktoberfest weekend when many people come to La Crosse from out of town.

Last year, the group kept nearly one hundred people away from the water during Oktoberfest weekend.

Organizer Alex Mrotek says when it comes to staying safe on a busy weekend downtown, there's strength in numbers.

"Bad things don't happen when you're in groups of two or more, typically. So I would say if you have a friend that you're accompanying with or even just a group of people, try to stay together just because sticking together would be the safest bet," said Mrotek.

The group is still looking for volunteers for this weekend.
