1996: Bill Monroe, the singer-songwriter and musician who helped create the style of music known as bluegrass, dies at age 84 in Nashville, Tennessee. Bluegrass music takes its name from his band, the Blue Grass Boys, named for Monroe's home state of Kentucky. Pictured here is an exhibit on Monroe at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum, including his Gibson F-5 mandolin.
