1976: Chinese communist revolutionary and politician Mao Zedong, commonly referred to as Chairman Mao, is taken off life support and dies at age 82 in Beijing, China. He had suffered a heart attack seven days earlier, his third overall, and his lung infection had worsened. The founding father of the People's Republic of China from its establishment in 1949, he governed the country as chairman of the Communist Party of China until his death.
